Sheet material waste: how much loss is normal

How to turn cutting waste into a number you can apply to every quote.

Why waste happens

A standard sheet rarely divides into exact parts. You are left with offcuts, trim cuts, grain-driven orientation and the odd defect.

Waste is not a mistake, it is a predictable cost. The mistake is leaving it out of the price.

Large, regular parts in plain sheet: roughly 8% to 12%.

Small parts, many variations or grain-matched material: 15% to 25%. Veneered work with mandatory grain direction can exceed that.

Divide the total sheet area purchased for a job by the useful area of the parts produced. The difference is your real waste.

Do that on five or six typical jobs and you will have a far more reliable figure than any generic table.

Store the waste factor on each catalog material so everyone quoting uses the same rule.

Review it once or twice a year, or whenever you change machines, nesting software or the type of work you take on.
