What an ERP is and what it does in a joinery shop

No jargon: what changes in the shop once you stop running the business on loose spreadsheets.

An ERP is the shop's organized memory

In plain words, an ERP is one program that holds all the company information: customers, quotes, materials, jobs, hours, deliveries and payments.

Instead of splitting that between a notebook, three spreadsheets, an inbox and the owner's head, it lives in one connected place. Approve a quote and the shop already knows what to build and what material it needs.

The problem is rarely work, it is numbers

Plenty of joinery shops invoice well and earn little. Not for lack of customers: the quote was done from memory, material prices rose, changes went unrecorded and hours were never counted.

An ERP fixes that by making every cost traceable: a panel has a supplier price, an operation has hours, a job has consumed material.

What changes in practice

Quoting stops being half an afternoon in a spreadsheet and becomes picking materials from a catalog. Margin appears while you quote, not three months later.

On the floor every job has a status: not started, running, done. On delivery you record who received it. At month end you know which jobs made money.

Where to start without overcomplicating

Start with customers and quotes. That is where the money is and the easiest part to adopt.

Then add the material catalog with your suppliers' prices. Only once that runs smoothly is it worth switching on production, stock and dispatch.
